ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the digital space of smart cities; the creation of the smart urban environment itself as a multi-level construct made of broadband networks, smart devices and smart meters, sensors and other embedded systems, data and data management technologies, cloud infrastructure, platforms, applications, and e-services. It discusses the improvement of the city’s system of innovation and the governance of innovation in the public and private sectors. The chapter focuses on digital platforms and smart city solutions and discusses digital connectivity and smart city ecosystems. The term ‘ecosystem’ refers to a group of interacting organisations and their interdependent activities. With the rise of the smart everything/smart city paradigm, ecosystems are changing. In smart ecosystems, instead of being part of a stable network of linkages organisations have the opportunity to build their own cyber-physical connections.
