ABSTRACT
I was born in 1904 in a little river town in southeastern Ohio. The Muskingum Valley had been settled very early by New Englanders. The Indians had long since disappeared, but arrowheads still turned up in the spring ploughing, and my father had a large collection. A river town, with a dam and a water-powered mill smelling of grain, is a memorable place for a small boy.
