ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes students' construct “ecological optics” in two ways: first, from a systematic point of view, and aims to discuss the validity of their application of its basic rules in their theory of space perception. In students' discussion the central question is an analysis of the information available in the optical convergence points in space, given by the network of rays from reflected light. Optical image generation is macroscopic in character in the same way as students have stressed for ecological optics and it is submitted to the well developed mathematics of geometrical optics. Information contained in the optical convergence point, or the station point, may be described in many different but theoretically equivalent ways. The term refers to the automatic and unavoidable splitting up into unitary components of the complex pattern of change in the optical convergence point.
