ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the visual awakening of a doctoral Social Studies student as she interrogates her research questions. In surrendering and committing to the artist identity, her visual voice revealed its power with which to think. The emergence of her stick people uncovered an intra-active contemplation, conceptualization, and profound conversation with emergent knowing and understanding as she grappled with the theory and the trajectory of her own research interests. Embracing visual methods inspired a profound interrogation of traditional processes of thinking and knowing, validating, and empowering her to expand her exploration with materiality.
