ABSTRACT

Previews are essentially rehearsals performed in front of a paying audience. During the preview process, each afternoon changes are implemented in the show, and each evening the show (with the included changes) is performed in the front of an audience. The preview process schedule is the same as tech with morning work calls and afternoon rehearsals, except that the performances happen at the night (and often matinees on the weekends). During previews, there comes a day called the “Freeze Date” or “Lock Date”— which is typically a week or five to seven performances before opening. Small dialogue changes may still be inserted, but the show is then considered frozen or locked. Opening night is a huge reason for celebration. For the large professional productions, such as broadway, opening night often includes a glamorous opening night party at a fancy location.
