ABSTRACT

This chapter begins the exploration of content use in a projection design. First, it introduces thinking about content in relation to the theatrical world, starting with a consideration of presentation surfaces. By considering the number of surfaces used for the design, their size and shape, aspect ratio, resolution, color, reflectivity, opacity, and texture, the designer can determine an approach to content based on the demands of the surfaces. Additionally, the approach to content creation is affected by how content is displayed (on a flat surface, onto three-dimensional scenery, or through emissive displays). Finally, this chapter covers numerous content considerations, such as the amount of content required, selecting surfaces, organizing files and assets, naming protocols, and determining the specific types of content required. Field research is also included, featuring an interview with the internationally renowned projection designer and live cinema advocate, Tal Yarden.
