ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses projection surfaces and the many different variables at play with projection screens, fabrics, and projecting directly onto scenery. The first section covers projection screens and such factors as screen gain, viewing angle, contrast ratio, texture, and front vs. rear projection. The second section discusses the use of fabrics for projection surfaces, such as muslin, scrims, netting, and mesh, as well as the use of screen coatings. The final section addresses the use of scenery as a projection surface and issues such as projection mapping, overlapping projection surfaces, and surface concerns. Field research is also included, featuring an interview with projection designer Jeff Sugg.
