ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on understanding projection design for the theatre. It starts off with an examination of the term projection design itself and includes a brief history of the use of projection in performances from the magic lantern to today’s media servers. In addition, the chapter serves as a primer for working as a projection designer in the live performance industry, addressing the field, basic skillsets, and specific thoughts on the profession ranging from agents and unions to financial concerns, travel, and running an office. Field research is also included, featuring an interview with projection designer Wendall K. Harrington.
