ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 focuses on the preliminary steps taken by a projection designer to create their design. Starting with financial and logistical concerns, the chapter examines determining a design fee, equipment concerns, and timetable/scheduling concerns. Section 2 addresses how a designer assesses the projection needs through a series of questions. Moving on, the chapter focuses on understanding the script and developing a design concept, using such tools as script response questions, visual research, finding and documenting research, and developing intention. Field research is also included, featuring an interview with Broadway projection designer Peter Nigrini.
