ABSTRACT

Students enroll in a composition class for a variety of different reasons. Words and concepts relating to art tend to be used and shared without a deep understanding of their meaning. Additionally, encouraging the students to find answers and supporting the participative process is much a more effective educational tool than simply giving them definitions of artistic concepts. Many students will, interestingly, appear to play a role that protects the style of dance performed in a live music concert or at the Super Bowl, for example, not wanting it to have a less than artistic description but not knowing why they feel that way or why it should or shouldn’t be labeled entertainment. Inevitably, students started shouting out as well, and the dancers began responding from the green room. Gradually, it seemed, people caught up with technology, and a larger cross section of audiences knew and understood how to work social media, so participation numbers rose.
