ABSTRACT

This chapter is a case study based on resilience and is told through the eyes of Shanice, a teacher in a further education college. Shanice narrates the story of her difficult childhood and how she lived through poverty. She recalls the effect this had on developing her resilience and outlines how she adopts a structured approach to dealing with adversity. Shanice’s approach involves devising several goal-oriented to-do lists that she can work through in a systematic manner. When faced with a difficult situation, she claims that her goals are set around overcoming her difficulty, whilst the structure enables her to retain her focus. Shanice also suggests that her stubbornness can play a role in her resilience as it can be channelled towards a refusal to give up.
