ABSTRACT

The Further Education (FE) and Skills sector has long been fraught with difficulties regarding its identity and the funding it receives. In the last decade, growing pressures in the workplace and rising austerity across the sector have impacted severely. Many teachers have considered leaving the profession due to being stressed and overworked. This chapter outlines the importance of resilience for educators in the FE and Skills sector in a time of critical need. It explores how teachers are currently suffering due to excessive workloads and the ever-growing, and often unrealistic, demands made on their roles. It asks what resilience is, how teachers need it, and how they can use it to reconceptualise, and deal with, pressure.
