ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the benefits of good physical health for teachers in the Further Education and Skills sector and promotes exercise as a positive contribution to the development of resilience. It examines the effect of exercise on the body and explores how busy teachers with heavy workloads can find time to accommodate exercise periods within their working days. The chapter also explores the stressful cycle of heavy teaching loads and the impact this can have on the body. It emphasises the importance of creating a work–leisure balance and argues that staying healthy and exercising can impact on attitudes and aspirations, two important elements for developing resilience. Overall, the chapter identifies the powerful effect of combining diet, sleep, and exercise to potentially alleviate stress and anxiety for busy teachers.
