ABSTRACT

While resource-based views provide an explanation for the internal organisation of the firm, these lack a credible basis for distinguishing the interaction of the firm with its environment. As a consequence, neither the account of learning nor the nature and behaviour of the firm can be generalised since the logical consequence of successful adaption is that firms are adapted to particular conditions and external environments. The following theories emphasise environments in different ways and use specific forms of uncertainty to understand these and the firm.
