ABSTRACT

For a caregiver, it can feel overwhelming on how many games, apps, and software are out there. There are some not-so-good resources out there for children: apps filled with advertisements and hidden microtransactions, software that violates privacy, educational games that offer little to no learning, and video content incorrectly labeled for children. This chapter focuses on preschool plus because of recommendations from pediatricians to limit technology below the age of 2. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics found through a pilot program of children ages 1-5 found that of the 135 apps reviewed, 95% contained at least one type of advertising. Parents may spend time reviewing and evaluating apps for young children, but not consider the advertisements that may appear in those apps. The growth of online homework can impact children’s privacy. As children age, the mindset of parents needs to shift from regulating content to encouraging young people to create their own content.
