ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book supports students in identifying the skills and expertise that they have developed from their time in higher education and then applying this knowledge to a range of occupational settings outside of the core BPS practising areas. It helps students develop a framework for developing self-understanding that will help self-improvement, give clarity and a sense of purpose and yield pride from the work that they do. The book examines the search for employment, the tools and techniques for finding career opportunities and how to develop the social and cognitive skills that help identify opportunities and improve the ability to interact effectively with others. It provides a foundation for the student’s personal narrative: how to effectively draw on and apply their experience at the interview and how to use that narrative to harness self-confidence.
