ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some tips, tricks and advice for getting work ready. Psychology training does a terrific job of helping its students self-reflect and learn, but we are all still prone to defensiveness and blind spots in our behaviour. Positive psychology teaches us to be more attuned to maladaptive thoughts and actions and then to seek out more proactive, long-term ways to manage them. Positive psychology works to help us be more aware of the seductive nature of the short-term gains that come with avoiding problems, particularly problems that promote anxiety. Positive psychology is the scientific examination of the conditions that lead to life satisfaction, flourishing and the good life. Martin Seligman, widely considered the father of positive psychology, proposes the Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment model as the five measurable elements of well-being. In positive psychology, crisis reveals character.
