ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on treatment approaches for incel clients and the approaches a therapist might take in helping them. First, the importance of active listening is addressed. We then look at existential psychotherapy and the four ultimate concerns in life, freedom, death, isolation, and meaninglessness. Narrative therapy is discussed as a way to alter the story of the incel to produce healthier outcomes. We suggest going beyond the symptoms and facing the incel’s fear. Rational emotive behavioral therapy focuses on reframing our beliefs about events so that we improve the consequences of those beliefs. We look at the way Navy SEALs cope with stress and discuss reality therapy and motivational interviewing. Finally, we introduce transtheoretical change theory as a framework for making changes in the incel’s life.
