ABSTRACT

When depression is present in long-term conditions, this can be aided by low-intensity CBT, Beckian cognitive therapy, or recent approaches in the third wave tradition, including act and compassion focused therapy. This chapter has focused predominantly on the cognitive approach including a detailed account of Beck’s CT for depression and special considerations when working with people with LTC. Imagery work, as a cognitive approach to working with depression with LTC is also outlined. Third wave approaches focusing on acceptance, diffusion, values and compassion are outlined and some techniques are described in detail in the next chapter.
