ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the discursive methodological approach to qualitative inquiry - the third approach in Trude’s PhD work. From a Foucauldian understanding of the term ‘discourse,’ the discussion moves from questioning whether locating oneself outside of discourse is feasible, to the relationship between discourse and Wittgensteinian ‘language games,’ and the distinction between ‘micro’ and ‘grand’ discourses. After considering the mediating role of power in discursive qualitative inquiry, and its implications for academic relationships, knowledge, and research, the chapter ends in a reflexive exchange on issues emerging from patriarchal discourse, and how these might impact on the relationship between Alec and Trude.
