ABSTRACT

Around the world, case authors are adapting their writing techniques to develop new cases. This chapter explores how to source the right types of data to inform case writing and discusses the merits of classic field research case studies. Principally there are three different approaches to sourcing data to create a case: field research, desk research and personal experience. Field research case studies have fallen in popularity proportionate to the number of desk-based case studies, for a number of reasons. Cases developed entirely through desk-based research do not normally require formal release authorisation from the organisation under review, provided that the case writer can clearly demonstrate the secondary sources that have informed the research.
