ABSTRACT

The chapter scrutinizes the nature of public discourses about science and health, with all the often-forgotten ambivalences that have always surrounded science and its representations. To go beyond simplistic interpretations that pit the rational against the irrational, and the experts against the public as a whole, we propose to take a broader view of the analytical space. Reflecting on the limitations of thinking in terms of science versus pseudoscience calls for greater attention to all of the many dimensions involved in discourses about science and health and their implications for communication.
