ABSTRACT

In this chapter, an overview of the postmodern critique and how it has been used to advance family therapy is given. A discussion of the critiques postmodern family therapist gave of family systems theory is provided. Then, the limitations that others have made against postmodernism and postmodern family therapy are explored, and a case is made that family systems theory provides a stronger theoretical foundation on which to build a family therapy practice. Because family systems theory embraces a positivist/post-positivist view, it can be scrutinized and changed by the addition of new evidence – something that postmodern family therapy does not ascribe to.
