ABSTRACT

An overview of attachment theory is provided and the strengths that attachment theory has given to family therapy are discussed. The limitations of attachment theory are discussed, and an argument is made as to why family systems theory provides a better foundation to build a family therapy practice. Specifically, the assumption of a secure base and the de-prioritization of the individuality process limit the usefulness of attachment theory. Research that supports these limitations of attachment theory are discussed, and a discussion of how family systems theory can incorporate the best parts of attachment theory while accounting for its weaknesses is given.
