ABSTRACT

Each of the systems that create the family system is blanketed in the sociocultural system. In this chapter, the concepts of power, privilege, and oppression are defined and evidence for their presence in all cultures is given. Particular attention is paid to the development of racist policies and ideas, and how the institution of marriage has led to inequities. Evidence of income inequality and health inequity are provided as just two outcomes of power, privilege, and oppression. The Sociocultural Family Stress Model and the evidence for this model are used to describe how the family system is required to adapt because of power, privilege, and oppression.
