ABSTRACT

“Reggie” was a male in his late 20s who had schizophrenia for at least a decade when he was admitted to the schizophrenia clinic. The interesting thing about Reggie is that while he came from a New England family of great wealth and resources, he very illogically preferred to live a life of homelessness and transience, primarily living in the streets, often hungry and beaten. He would speak and act as if he were raised in Australia. Further, Reggie refused to take any medications for his schizophrenia, despite that they had a very high chance of working, demonstrating the severe lack of insight that is typical of people with schizophrenia. This chapter, as others, demonstrates the often-observed downward shift in functioning often observed in schizophrenia.
