ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 focuses on the chord progression to the jazz standard with a contrafact called “Now, Out of Here.” Instead of embellishing a simple melody, as was the primary activity of the previous chapters, this chapter reverses the process, beginning with an improvised-sounding melody and analyzes the chord tones of the melody that was its foundation. This is more likely to be closer to the process an experienced improviser would use. After the analysis, the reader is tasked with going through the same process, recording their own improvisations over the chord progression, choosing a chorus they like, then transcribing and analyzing their own improvised solo to identify chord tones and their use of melodic embellishments.
