ABSTRACT

As is seen from the primitive art of the world, the use of lines to express images is a common approach. However, as painting developed, the East and West have made great differences in the purpose of using lines. Western lines are often a tool to rationally describe the outer contours of things, light, and shadow, and their function is to accurately reproduce things scientifically and prudently. Oriental lines of art have been given more connotations. In traditional Chinese painting, the status of lines is higher than anything else. Animators make many successful attempts to express the unique style of animations with lines in traditional paintings. The animated film Distress on Ice by director Wu Qiang uses lines which are close to woodcut, which are strong and powerful. The art design in Nine-color Deer is very characteristic, which maintains the unique style of murals from the Northern Wei Dynasty (368-534).
