ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on providing parents, teachers, therapists, and childcare workers with a systematic approach that has been demonstrated to assist young people in de-escalating an emotional crisis. It provides concepts that may be useful when confronted by a crisis. The chapter argues that adult self-awareness is the primary factor in de-escalating a child. There are different types of crisis and violence. A crisis or violent outburst can be the result of a brain injury, seizure, or other neurological event. When adults allow themselves to feel the emotions that bubble up inside them during a crisis, it provides the child with a sense of relief. Finally, adults must assess their emotional experience with children in order to change the emotional context of the crisis. The following highlights the emotional context of a crisis. For example: Clinical wisdom suggests that children in crisis often repeat the same difficulties.
