ABSTRACT

As time has passed, researchers and scientists have added concepts and theories in the domain of research on government. These theories and concepts have gradually shifted to governance to accommodate multifarious actors for a participatory form of administration. The new vision of local governance, new public management, good governance, theories of decentralisation, and so on have contributed greatly to this shift. This chapter provides in-depth and extensive explanations of the concepts relating to governance and NGOs. The chapter reveals that NGOs have turned to various methods and techniques throughout history to empower the marginalised, and most recently, fourth-generation NGOs have been involved with political affairs of strengthening governance and establishing good governance. The elaborated discussions unpack the concepts and related issues, which determine the path this study takes in the later empirical chapters of this book.
