ABSTRACT

Human biology is an intricate assemblage of related units, many of which continue to remain a mystery. In Abraham Maslow's 1954 book Motivation and Personality , he expressed what has become a fundamental concept in modern psychology, referred to as Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow's theory now widely accepted, says that consciously or not, as a card-carrying member of the human species, we have a biological need for self-actualization. We carry a deep need to understand and achieve our full potential as unique individuals. Maslow theorized that there is a ladder of needs we must climb to reach self-actualization, which is the deepest possible level of satisfaction a human being can achieve. Maslow's hierarchy has been applied to all kinds of scenarios including employee engagement in the workplace. Good leaders often seek to understand what motivates their employees as a way to engage them in the work. This helps to drive both the employee and the company toward success.
