ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews modern approaches to counseling that are widely used in counseling centers. Unlike traditional theories such as Freudian or Adlerian, these models are mainly treatment-focused and do not have elaborate philosophies about personality development or psychopathology. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and ecotherapy are popular approaches for treating a variety of client problems. DBT was originally developed for treating borderline personality disorders but has been expanded to treat many other issues. This model focuses on self-regulation, stress tolerance, interpersonal skills, and mindfulness. Mindfulness models highlight the importance of focusing on the present and adopting a non-judgmental stance. And ecotherapy attempts to address stress and anxiety through a variety of activities in a semi-structured environment.
