ABSTRACT

In this chapter, metaphors are described as a type of framing where the source frame is drawn from a clearly distinct and concretely imaginable area of life. For example, climate change is a problem can be seen as a literal description because the source frame of problem is broad enough to include climate change literally. On the other hand, climate change is a rollercoaster or climate change is a timebomb are metaphorical framings since rollercoasters and timebombs are both clearly distinct from climate change and concretely imaginable. An extended analysis is conducted of one important metaphor: the corporation is a person. This metaphor is potentially damaging if metaphorical reasoning is used to give corporations rights that are usually given only to people, and is both a contented and resisted metaphor in contemporary society.
