ABSTRACT

This chapter covers deficit thinking in this second South Pacific country. Topics discussed are: (a) conquest and colonization of New Zealand; (b) early education in New Zealand; (c) ethnic demographic profile; (d) TAG; (e) manifestations of deficit thinking in educational thought and practice. Deficit thinking themes discussed are: (a) teachers; (b) curriculum differentiation; (c) language; (d) parental involvement; (e) higher education. In this chapter, a brief discussion of deficit thinking in Fiji is also provided. This Fijian theme has to do with teachers.
