ABSTRACT

Deficit thinking in “Other European Countries” is the subject of this chapter. Two countries are covered, Ireland and Belgium. The chapter begins with a discussion of xenophobia in Europe. The deficit thinking themes in Ireland have to do with: (a) perceptions of Irish Traveller culture and students; (b) teachers; (c) parents. For Belgium, these deficit thinking themes are discussed: (a) students' perceptions of school failure and success and teacher racism; (b) the role of Flemish staff members in perpetuating monocultural school practices; (c) language.
