ABSTRACT
The subject of statistics is the focus of many undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and can fill entire books. In this chapter, we cover what we believe to be the minimum amount of statistics needed to understand the application of likelihood ratios to DNA profile interpretation. We introduce some definitions, discuss the laws of probability, and introduce Bayes’ theorem, the likelihood ratio, proposition setting, common fallacies, and the verbal scale.
