ABSTRACT

This chapter looks closely at al-Shaykh Aḥmad al-Damanhūrī’s The Clear Statement within the context of Ottoman medicine. First, the chapter offers a general background on the Ottoman medical environment. Then, focusing on two near-contemporary medical manuscripts authored by two religious scholars and likely aimed at non-specialized readership, the chapter investigates further the place of learned medicine within the context of The Clear Statement. The chapter then dives into the details of The Clear Statement including its structure and organization, its connection to prophetic medicine literature, and its notions of natural theology. Finally, the chapter considers the summary of The Clear Statement, which was composed by al-Damanhūrī himself, as a window into what he believed to be the most important parts of his own treatise.
