ABSTRACT
This chapter explores hypocoristics/shortenings and embellished clippings and how, via iconisation, many are linked to “Australianness” and illustrate typical ways of being, while others are linked to undesirable social types. Later, (ING), pronoun variation and final particle but, are explored with just the last of these including questionnaire data. Voicings and mentions of these are particularly detailed and ideologically laden but also demonstrate the interconnectedness of linguistic levels of analysis in folklinguistic data. This points to explanations which engage with variation above the level of the variant or individual variable.
