ABSTRACT

There are psychotherapeutic interventions that are efficacious for many survivors. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, guided imagery and hypnosis, dream work and dialectical behavioral therapy fall into this category. This chapter discusses the interventions and how to choose the most effective ones for each individual. Hypnosis and guided imagery lead to a relaxed and open state of awareness that encourages general relaxation and helps survivors detach from trauma memories. Meta-analyses confirm the effectiveness of hypnosis, primarily as an adjunct treatment. Surveys show that spirituality increases coping for those affected by trauma, also aiding the recovery process. The most important factor in choosing interventions, besides safety, is client interest. Art therapy can be a good choice for survivors who use art as a means of coping with stress. Other considerations for each modality are discussed.
