ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the healthcare activities of our sample of missionaries – the people they serve, the services they provide, and where they work. What clearly stand out in missionaries’ healthcare work are their choice of the communities to serve and the many non-health-related services they provide in addition to basic healthcare. Empirical literature from development economics shows why our sample of missionaries makes the choices that they do. In particular, there is a deliberate effort to serve the ultra-poor, that is, the poorest of the poor. And because of the extensive and severe deprivation of this group, missionaries have had to respond accordingly with a wide variety of ancillary services.
