ABSTRACT

The identified information gap on foreign direct investment (FDI) in large-scale agriculture in Ethiopia begs for an in-depth study in the extent, nature and impact of these investments in Ethiopia. FDI in large-scale agriculture is a complex issue that involves economic, social, political, environmental and cultural aspects. The FDI in the agricultural land more than 5,000 hectares is concentrated in only in three regions, namely Gambella, Beneshangul-Gumuz and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region. There is therefore little choice in the case study areas, and all areas where the majority of FDI in large-scale agriculture are prevalent are included. The documents from governments were used to assess the nature and history of FDI in agriculture in Ethiopia. The discussions were conducted in a conversational manner but focusing on the main issues of FDI in large-scale agriculture processes and impacts on their localities.
