ABSTRACT

The counseling profession has traveled a considerable distance since its founding as a separate profession in 1952. Through legislative progress and professional landmarks such as licensure, counselors have become common fixtures in schools, agencies, hospitals, and private practice. Many people are confused, however, as to the distinctions between counselors, psychologists, and social workers among other disparate mental health disciplines. This chapter provides scaffolding regarding the history of the counseling profession, unique features, professional ethical and legal issues, and occupational outlook. The Lessons Learned section at the chapter’s conclusion addresses major themes in counseling practice.
