ABSTRACT

While the average citizen’s image of the counseling encounter likely is the lone counselor assisting an individual client, group and family counseling have become popular treatment modalities. Group counseling is particularly common in substance abuse treatment and in residential psychiatric settings. Family and couples counseling has become a staple of holistic treatment. But, what are the additional challenges involved in counseling groups, couples, and families? What additional training and supervision is required? What are the specific ethical and legal challenges involved in treating more than one client simultaneously? When should group, couples, and family counseling be avoided? This chapter addresses these particular issues and concerns, and several more.
