ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the context of transformation in South Africa and the problems with transforming higher education. I then position the higher education field as a site of struggle that creates the conditions and possibility for transformation. The use of fields positions the university as a place where different ideologies, interests and access to power and resources create the conditions for conflicts between those who want to change the existing structures, cultures and practices and those who want to maintain things as they are. I argue that this struggle creates the possibility for transforming or reproducing legacies of oppression.
