ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the barriers to creating authentic parent relationships. As a leader in the classroom and the school, working through conflict without racing up the escalation ladder is a challenge. Unconventional leadership in the classroom and the office when working with families requires rethinking “right” vs “wrong” and instead looking for middle ground, perspective taking, and true listening to make a real difference. Parent relationships no longer come in the form of two to three times per year in a conference format. Routines and rituals are the foundation in education. Routines can set the stage for unconventional family engagement. School registration events can be a stressful process for families. Switching leadership positions within the same district can also accomplish the same concept. When learning conversations happen regularly within a supportive environment, learners cultivate improved self-awareness, envision and set their own learning goals, and monitor progress more effectively.
