ABSTRACT

The undersigned wish to introduce a motion to elect as Corresponding Member of the Academy Professor Heinrich Hertz, at the present time still Professor of Physics at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe, but already appointed as Ordinary Professor of the same subject at the University of Bonn. Throughout this work his attention was continually called to the fundamental questions of the theory of electrodynamics; the most important research accomplished by him thus far is in this field. This area of physics was in no sense uncultivated. On the contrary, because at stake here was the uncovering of a new system of forces that must differ essentially in their fundamental behavior from that of Newton’s force of gravitation, the attention of the most prominent theoreticians and experimentalists had been unceasingly directed to this problem. These researches are further demonstrations of a deeply penetrating mind and great skill in translating theoretical problems into experimental tests.
