ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the research methodology, and discusses the design and conduct of the collection of data for the survey and fieldwork element of the study. A questionnaire supported by a semi-structured interview using a sub-sample of 20 counsellors who responded to the questionnaire was used. W. Wiersma, Bell, J. P. Keeves, and R. F. DeVellis have all offered general guidelines for the design of questionnaires in order to make them easier to complete and analyse. The pilot survey was the next step in devising a Likert-type questionnaire. The aim of the pilot survey was to allow for item pool meaningfulness or face validity to be tested with both a group of white counsellors and a group of Black counsellors, all having some interest in work with counselling Black clients. The final version of the questionnaire was sent to the British Association for Counselling’s Research Committee and its Race and Culture Committee before agreement to allow use of their membership postal list.
