ABSTRACT

Typically there are two ways of applying for jobs in broadcast journalism – a letter or email accompanied by a CV (curriculum vitae) and possibly a showreel, or an online application form. Students can prepare a letter, CV and showreel that would fit any job. But that is not the best way. Student's application should be tailored to the job students are applying for. Student's covering letter, which may be an email, should also be concise – rarely more than a page, grammatically accurate and with correct spellings. One journalism student had an offer of a work placement withdrawn because she made a spelling mistake in her email accepting the offer. When students apply for a job, they will include student's CV, whether it's a printed document or something they do online. A showreel tailored to a particular job description may take time, but it's worth the effort.
