ABSTRACT

Increasing the child’s feeling of competence with psychoeducation contributes to the child’s inner motivation to reach goals. Psychoeducation is provided in simple child language with metaphors to explain why memories create problems, the impact of trauma on the brain and body, the stress system and the relationship between trauma and symptoms. By explaining how dissociation, conversion, attachment problems can occur, the child can become motivated to address these problems. Traumatized parents participate in these conversations to increase their understanding of the child as well as understanding of their own trauma reactions. Caregivers participate to enable them to discuss the child’s motivation further in daily life situations.
