ABSTRACT

In the course of our research, we found that, however difficult it might seem to articulate concrete answers to these questions, discussing them showed one link between management education and the humanities and social sciences, which was perceived if not explicitly to offer, then at least to lead, towards answers: a link which became more clearly visible with each stage of our project. Our book’s title, Transformative Management Education: The Role of the Humanities and Social Sciences, showcases this link. All the business schools that we researched were working towards changing management education, away from merely providing students with applicable technical skills in specialised areas, into an educational experience which would transform students holistically, through enhancing their understanding of and interaction with the social, economic and cultural contexts of management-and at all of those schools, the humanities and social sciences were perceived to play an important role in this endeavour.
